Adobe squeezes the Photoshop down to phone size with Photoshop Touch

Adobe has brought its flagship photo editor to mobile devices with Photoshop Touch for iOS and Android…

So far, the mobile Photoshop strategy of Adobe Systems has kept the more heavyweight photo editing features to tablets, and had left the Android mobile phones and the iPhones with Photoshop Express, the lightweight photo editor. However, today the American multinational computer software company has officially announced the release of Photoshop Touch for Android smartphones and iPhone, which, according to the company, inherits almost all the functionalities of the much more robust tablet application, and features a new interface specially tailored in order to match the smaller screen sizes.

Most of the best features of Photoshop that users would expect have been made available with Photoshop Touch. These include filters, layers, and adjustments. There are also selection tools that enable selecting items and facilitate better editing functionalities. In addition, there are many tools that are exclusive only for the smartphone version, like Scribble Selection that enables to accurately make selections using one’s fingers, and the Camera Fill, which can be used to blend the layers and camera feed.

Adobe has tried to make Photoshop Touch a robust mobile application, which means it requires a large amount lot of processing power. However, that means the app can only be run on the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5, and Android smartphones that runs Android version 4.0 ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) or higher. This obviously limits the number of devices that will be able to support it, but Stephen Nielson, the  Photoshop product manager at Adobe Systems, stated that this is due to the fact that they expect the experience being good enough to live up to the standards of Photoshop.

The app is now available in the Apple Store and Google’s Play app stores, in English, German, French, and Japanese.
