Asteroid due to shave past Earth

The Asteroid 2012 DA14 is set to make a record close to Earth tonight…

A space rock the size similar to an Olympic swimming pool is going to whizz past the Earth today!

However, there is no need to worry as experts claim the asteroid will not crash into the planet.

In spite of coming so close to globe that it would pass lower than some of the communications satellites, the 45m (150ft) “2012 DA14” asteroid in not going to be near enough to be seen with the naked eye in the evening sky, professionals stated.

The rock, which is almost as big as an apartment building is going to buzz the Earth at 27680 km (17,200 miles) distance. And it will not be travelling very slowly either; as it is going to race past at a 7.8 kilometers (approximately 5 miles) a second.

A good binocular might be able to pick out the visitor at its closest to the Earth at 19:25 tonight. However, you will also be able to watch the event unfold live on NASA’s live picture stream.

Even though much smaller asteroids have come closer to earth than 2012 DA14, object this big makes such a narrow pass about once in every 40 years.
