Jewel Quest Heritage editor's review

Rupert's arch-rival Sebastian Grenard has decided to steal the Gold Jewel Board, claiming that it is a part of his family heritage, and that Rupert and his family have no rights at all on it. The only way that Rupert is going to prove that the Jewel Board belongs to him is to start digging through his past and the past of his ancestors all the way to the beginning and the creation of the Golden Jewel Board by the Aztecs. The gameplay structure remains the same as the three previous parts of the game, as you must match 3 tiles, after which they turn to gold tile, and the level is over only then when all the tiles in the board have become gold, and of course all the time isn’t spent. There are a couple of new board types this time around, including a Limited Jewels mode where there are only so many jewels available to complete the board before they stop appearing; and also there is the Swap mode where you match the tiles until the time runs out and the amount of tiles is also limited. You can swap two different tiles even if you don’t have a match. There are 170 boards in total, and an Expert mode to unlock as well. The previous part, Jewel Quest III has based his story of match 3 by the geographical regions, but the Heritage introduces a new system of gameplay. Instead of the regions you will be using the family tree as the map of finding all the items, or the part of the complete puzzle you must solve, and starting with Rupert's daughter Natalie and goes backwards through hundreds of years of Rupert's ancestors. With every jewel board completed or better yet with every person investigated from the family tree you’ve been given a part of your heritage, like previously said, and you advance to the next person in line to investigate. Every person is tagged with an info card, and through the Jewel board you find out more about that ancestor. That info includes solving a couple of puzzles in order to get the complete information you need. As you advance more further from an ancestor to ancestor back in to the past the game difficulty slowly increases, but surely making the match 3 board games harder and harder, in some cases with almost zero tolerance for mistakes. You are introduces with new ways of obstacles to make your gameplay more difficult like indestructible blocks, locked spaces, buried jewels and ice blocks. Board shapes also keep getting more complicated as the game evolves. If you have noticed that you started to play the same type of match 3 in a row, you can solve that problem before it starts getting on your nerves, by swapping characters on which you play, but you can only swap to those for which you have the necessary items collected. Both the Swap and Limited Jewels boards are interesting variations that work well in the Jewel Quest context, and additional thing that is added to the game is the voice-over. You can hear it for the first time, and see it used in the game. As for the games story, you could imagine that tracing your ancestors a couple of thousands of years back could be real challenge and something that will give the game a real kick, but somewhere it just loses its effect. You will find yourself questioning a couple of people through the game and the information that you got is almost irrelevant. As the dialogues will certainly become more than boring the game developers have added the skip button, which you will use probably a couple of times. The graphics of the game is not the best there is in this genre, but still is very good, and it is one of the better game facts. The game play itself is pretty standard match three fare, with some small extras like bonus jewels and variations of the rules of the game. All in all, the game will provide you with a certain level of difficulty which will require match 3 skills, so it is not recommended for the beginner players. But you have the demo, anyone who wants to try it can.
