SheepArcade editor's review: Zenerchi, as the tutorial explains, is a positive state of mind attained by solving the problems or puzzles of life. Very deep words for a seemingly uncomplicated game, but its simplicity belie the intrigue and fascinating aspects of this brilliantly innovative tile-matching puzzle game. Even with the plethora of tile-matching puzzle games going around, Zenerchi still manages to re-invent the genre by creating a unique system of tile-matching by changing the geometry and the mechanics required to match the different tiles. The game board consists of a series of segmented circular rings, which the players can rotate to match segments of similar colour. Surprisingly, this fundamentally basic change in perspective and style of game play makes Zenerchi a immensely challenging game to play. In the Journey mode of play, there are 50 levels which span over 10 different worlds for you to challenge yourself. As you progress through the levels different types of blocking tiles are introduced, each making the tile-matching process just that touch more difficult, on the other hand, there are a variety of power-ups to balance the difficulty of the game nicely. Needless to say, you will be trying to reach the target score with the ever-present clock ticking along, so you have to think on your feet all the time. For those who achieve an expert score, you are rewarded with a thought-provoking quote that you can ponder as you brace yourself for the next level. Once you get through the first five levels (i.e. the first world), you unlock an alternate mode of play. In Zen mode, there are no time limits set on completing the level, but certain tiles are marked with numbers starting at 9, but the number counts down with each turn. Once the number reaches zero, the tile turns into a blocker tile which locks the ring of tiles on that row. In Zen mode, the level finishes when there are no possible moves left, but if you manage to fulfil the number of matches required for each colour, then you can advance to the next level. The tiles marked with numbers can also be removed by matching them with other colours, so in this mode of play, you have to consider your moves much more carefully and strategically. On top of the original tile-matching game play, Zenerchi also offers eye-catching visuals plus great sound effects that are very well integrated into the look and feel of the game. A smooth and easy to navigate user interface rounds off an addictively enjoyable game that breaks the mould of traditional tile-matching game genre. |
