SheepArcade editor's review: Another adaptation of a classic board game, that brings to alive the two dimensional tactical/strategy game thanks to the wonders of the electronic medium. But Battleship delivers even more actions and excitement than the original game, by extending the game play beyond a simple hit-and-miss affair, into an explosive naval affair! Battleship offers two basic modes of play: the Standard battleship game with four different modes, and the Fleet Command game that introduces some advanced tactics and strategies. In Standard mode, there are four options with regards to the turn of play. You can choose to alternate turns every shot (Single), every three shots (Triple), one shot for every ship that you still control (Salvo) or continue firing until you miss (Volley). Each mode forces players to implement slightly different strategies, and requires a different approach to taking out the enemy fleet. However, the standout feature of Battleship has to be the Fleet Command game, where players can command and unlock one of three different fleet configurations to engage in an advanced game play mode. In Fleet Command, each ship is given a special ability that you can use to your advantage. For example, the destroyer and battleship are given the ability to fire multiple shots into a specified area, thus increasing the chance of hitting an enemy ship. Each player is given three moves per turn to attack the enemy ships, use their special abilities, or move their ship to a nearby location, depending on the amount of damage the ship has taken. Battleship also introduces a variety of landscapes, which adds to the unpredictability of the game, and also compels the players to think more strategically about their moves and decisions. The sound effects and graphics breathe new life into the static nature of the original board game, making an already very enjoyable classic even better. There have been many attempts to turn classic board games into electronic games, but many fall short by simply delivering a clone of the board game, without adding any innovation or enhancements that is freely accessible to the electronic medium. However, where many have fallen short, Battleship manages to improve the original game by some very clever game design, a common sense approach to increasing the playability and excitement whilst still maintaining the core elements. Inspirational and awe-inspiring. Naval battle at its most entertaining and explosive, luckily there’s no casualties involved. |
