Facebook Revenue Goes Up 40 percent with Mobile Boom

The Social networking giant beats the expected revenue margins thanks to hype in users accessing the site through mobile devices…

On Wednesday, Facebook Inc. managed to beat the expectations of Wall Street. The company announced its earnings of the fourth-quarter as $64 million as revenues went up 40% to $1.59 billion, and also announced that the mobile revenues had doubled as the number of mobile users surpassed the desktop ones. However, its shares slightly went down in the trading.

Facebook Inc., founded by Mark Zuckerberg while he was still a student of Harvard University, stated that the mobile revenue went up, raking in a solid 23% of total revenue by advertising, which only weighted for 14% in the previous quarter.

The company also pointed out a transformation of the behavior of the users, as the number of users accessing the site via mobile devices per day has exceeded the number of users accessing it through desktop PCs for the first time. Out of the 1.06 billion active users who accessed FB during December, 680 million users were mobile users while 618 million used a desktop PC.

Zuckerberg, the CEO of FB stated, "In 2012, we connected more than a billion people and became a mobile company".

Google, the internet search giant, and FB are on a battle to profit from mobile users as more of the public are using tablets and smartphones to connect to the internet. Right now Google dominates the search engine market as facebook dominates the social media market. But it seems that Facebook is now attempting to conquer a share of the search engine market through its “Graph Search”.
