There are about 250 nations to choose from and you can also take your pick from a wide variety of time period. You start off by choosing a character and a year. You can build on your territories and armies and moreover noteworthy dates as entry points and information about the nations at your disposal, including a difficulty rating is available.
The main game-play involves using the menu to perform various changes to your nations including altering your nation's form of government, passing new laws and acts, research preferences, advisor hiring, armies, taxes, and so on.
