Oculus CEO Donates a Record $31 Million to University of Maryland for a VR Lab

Virtual reality headset Oculus Rift developer Oculus VR's $2 billion sale to Facebook deepened the pockets of many of the company's top executives. One of those people, CEO Brendan Iribe, is now giving some of that money away.

Today, the University of Maryland announced that Iribe--an alumnus--has donated $31 million to help fund the construction of the "Brendan Iribe Center for Computer Science and Innovation" on the school's campus in College Park, Maryland. Iribe's gift is the largest the school has ever received.

The donation, the largest in the history of the university, will help build a new computer science building that will house a dedicated virtual reality lab. "The public school system is really important to me," Iribe told Business Insider. "I grew up locally in Maryland, born and raised, and grew up in public schools. This is part of Oculus' commitment, and my commitment as CEO, to supporting education.

Oculus’ new parent company Facebook’s CEO showed Iribe the way. Zuckerberg famously donated $100 million to the New Jersey public school system, signed the giving pledge to give away most of his fortune, has taught a class a public school near Facebook’s headquarters, and was recognized as the most generous American in 2013 after donating $990 million worth of Facebook stock to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.
