Mini Ninjas

Control the powers of nature, possess creatures, use your furious Ninjas skills to free your Ninja friends.

The story in Mini Ninjas is one of magic, heroism and the importance of fellowship. Hiro is a young Ninja and the last person that anyone would expect to be asked to save the world. Yet that is exactly what happens when the Evil Samurai Warlord hatches a fiendish plan to raise an army bent on world domination. Hiro must lead his small band of Mini Ninjas on an exciting journey through a disintegrating world, battle the magical hordes of twisted Samurai, and eventually confront the Warlord in his Fortress of Doom.

I must warn you on the beginning of the review that this game at the first sight looks childish, without anything impressive to stick around for and a bit dull, but that changes pretty rapidly. The first of the reason to stick around is the game manufacturing company Io Interactive; which is responsible for the Hitman series. Now, we aren’t talking about some breath taking game, but if you like at least a little bit games from Japanese history, especially the ninja type, you won’t find it disappointing at all, and those who don’t will get use it very quickly. The game is played pretty straight forward, as there aren’t huge changes in the gameplay, but there are enough to keep you interested. The story goes with and old Ninja Master who has sensed a great disturbance in the balance of power in the world. Something started to change the nature of the beings that live in the wild, and he decides to send his trusty students down the mountain path to discover and explore what it is about! One by one, students were sent and didn’t return. 4 students totally were sent and every one of is given a season in the year as a time period to explore and return but they didn’t. So the Ninja Master decides to send his two best Ninja students together, and the only ones left, to find out what happened to their comrades and discover the truth about the environmental disturbance. As it turns out, the Evil Samurai Warlord has returned from his ancient defeat and is using dark Kuji magic to turn innocent animals into mindless samurai minions. It's up to Hiro and his friends to stop the Evil Samurai Warlord before the world is torn asunder by his improper use of Kuji magic. How does one create a fighting game that removes the violence? It’s all about the result of the battle. In most games of this genre you are shooting or fighting the enemy, generally killing them. In Mini Ninjas you are returning animals to their natural state. As the Evil Samurai Warlord uses the dark Kuji magic to turn animals into his loyal samurai minions, the only way to deal with him is by defeating them. This is done by using a couple of physical or special attack, on the samurai, but instead splashing blood all over the place and chopping their heads and limbs off, defeating them turns them in a cloud of smoke, after which they are returned free in their previous form. As Hiro is progressing through the game he rescues his friends from captivity, which then joins you in your fight against the Evil Samurai. Through the game you can change the players with which you can play as you can stay playing with Hiro, or one of his other 5 friends. Each of them has similar moves, like Primary Attack, Block Breaker Attack (which stuns enemies) and a Power Attack. Power Attacks are special attacks which differ by each character and using those drains of the Ki spheres you have stored. At the beginning of the game using Primary Attack is sufficient to defeat all of the enemies. After in the later phase of the game, you will have to start thinking more like a tactician, and start using those special attack and additional ninja equipment. However, you will discover that playing with the other ninjas isn’t as playing with Hiro. All of them have different weapons and different moves that can be performed, but Hiro is the only one that can use Kuji magic. Additionally you will be unlocking other spells which Hiro can use and making him even stronger especially when it comes in Boss fights and of course the final showdown against the Evil Samurai Warlord. Besides the spells in Hiro’s case, other ninjas just like him can grow in health, strength and special power usage, by gaining experience through battles. The most interesting part of the game that will certainly stun you is definitely the sound of the game and the graphics. The nice level of details is doe in the traditional Japanese way, with all of the characteristics of that time. The fulfilling sound of the flute and the drums you hear on the way will certainly have your heart beating faster. All in all a game which certainly needs to be played even if you aren’t a fan of the genre.
