Until Dawn Developer Suffers Layoffs

Supermassive Games announces 90 layoffs, with 150 jobs at risk, amid a reorganization phase. The studio, known for Until Dawn, employs 300. The move reflects the larger industry trend, with 6000+ layoffs in 2024, including 1900 by Microsoft.

Supermassive Games, the studio behind popular titles such as Until Dawn, are the latest to be hit by the wave of layoffs plaguing the industry. Bloomberg states that the studio informed employees that there will be 90 layoffs within the studio and that up to 150 positions are threatened. Supermassive currently employs around 300 people; layoffs at this scale are an ominous sign for the studio's future.

Via a statement directly from Supermassive, they claim to be undergoing a rigorous “reorganization” process which is causing the massive layoffs. They also state that the decision to cut such a large amount of staff was “not made lightly” and that various “preventive measures” were taken. The industry has experienced 6000+ layoffs in 2024 alone, with studios as recognizable as Supermassive resorting to such measures the future of triple-A gaming seems shaky at best currently. Microsoft itself fired upwards of 1900 people this year to “improve shareholder value” according to their CEO Phil Spencer.

As for Supermassive, they are currently set to release Little Nightmares 3 later this year, as well as a new entry in their Dark Anthology series.
